“Becoming What We Already Are: 1 John 3–4” Post 4 of 4

Perfect Love and Discernment in a Confusing World (1 John 4)

If 1 John 3 focuses on identity and ethical transformation, 1 John 4 focuses on discernment and the nature of God’s love. It is one of the richest theological chapters in the New Testament.

1. Testing the Spirits (4:1–6)

John begins with discernment. Not every spiritual claim is trustworthy. The key test is Christological:

“Every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.”

The Greek verb ὁμολογεῖ (homologei) means “to confess openly, to acknowledge publicly.” True teaching affirms the incarnation.

2. God Is Love (4:7–12)

John’s famous declaration—ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν (ho theos agapē estin)—is not a slogan but a theological claim. Love is not merely something God does; it is something God is.

Love Originates in God

John writes:

“Love is from God.” ἡ ἀγάπη ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστίν

Love is not a human invention. It is a divine gift.

God’s Love Revealed

God’s love is shown in sending His Son as ἱλασμός (hilasmos)—“atoning sacrifice.” This is love that acts, suffers, and restores.

3. Perfect Love Casts Out Fear (4:13–21)

John contrasts fear and love:

“Perfect love casts out fear.”

The verb βάλλει ἔξω (ballei exō) is forceful—“throws out,” “drives away.” Fear and love cannot coexist at the center of the Christian life.

Fear of Judgment

John is not dismissing reverence but addressing fear rooted in insecurity. Love produces confidence because it reflects God’s character.

Love as Command and Evidence

John concludes with a powerful ethical claim:

“Those who love God must also love their brothers and sisters.”

Love for God and love for neighbor are inseparable.
